LANTERN SLIDE

Still used in theatres today (although commonly in plastic form), lantern slides are small plates of glass with printing and simple colors painted on the surface which allow illumination to filter through.  

Lanterns are used in movie theatres to advertise upcoming and currently playing films - just tilt your head up to check above the theatre door next time you go to the show!
